Groove to Sacred Music from around the world featuring:

David Newman (Durga Das) and Mira
Concert and Sacred Art of Chanting workshop David Newman or Durga Das, as he is also known, is an internationally acclaimed Kirtan Chant Artist and a practitioner and educator of Bhakti Yoga—the Yoga of Love. David travels extensively singing Kirtan (Indian devotional chanting) and sharing the spiritual, devotional, meditative and musical aspects of yoga.  David's music embodies a devotional mysticism, distinctive musicality, poetic intimacy and a deep respect for India's ancient chant tradition.  His recordings expand the traditional Kirtan medium by incorporating a wide range of musical and lyrical elements and by exploring a vast palette of progressive production influences. He will appear with his wife, Mira, a celebrated devotional perfomer, recording artist and percussion artist.

Akira Satake
Appalachian World Music
Japanese-American banjo player Akira Satake garnered international attention with his collection of original compositions, “Cooler Heads Prevail,” and shared the 1998 German Music Critics Award for Best World Music recording with the legendary Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn. Satake will bring his own band of first rate local musicians to the yoga festival.

Mitch Nur, Ph. D.
Tibetan Sacred Music
Mitch Nur is a world renowned Master of the Himalayan Singing Bowls. His lectures and demonstrations feature an extensive blend of history, science, and culture; with a hands on approach enabling students to go beyond the academic to genuinely experiencing the discipline. The primary focus of his work is to provide all students the means by which to use sacred sound instruments to heal and strengthen their own physical and mental state--in turn, enabling them to heal others.

Ba Man Bia
World Music
Ba Man Bia is of a new generation of world music artists where deep interest in far-away sounds has been with them as long as they have listened to music. A young group recently formed in Asheville, they have created a fresh form of sound given their influence in Asian and African traditions, jazz and free improvisation. Their performance at LEAF this year was exciting and hot!

Caitanya Kirtan Group
Concert: Sanskrit, English and Sikh Kirtan
Blending the rich soaring vocals of Koriander, backed by harmonium or guitar, Rishis’s lively tabla rhythms as wells as bass and violin, this ecstatic chant group has performed at the Lake Eden Arts Festival, Unity Church and many yoga centers throughout the Southeast.

Sangita Devi
Kirtan—Ecstatic Chants
Sangita Devi is a popular kirtan band from Asheville, NC and has been leading weekly kirtans and performing and teaching Bhakti Yoga and ecstatic chants for the past seven years.

Simrit Kaur
East/West Songs of Devotion
Simrit Kaur is a singer, musician, teacher and mother. Her unique style of devotional music is deep, mystical and emotionally rich. She performs kirtan throughout the country and has a new album, The Sweetest Nectar, set for release in the fall of 2009. Simrit has a background in both the classical music systems of the east and the west. She teaches Naad Yoga (yoga of sound) and the use of the voice as an instrument for awakening consciousness.

Dada Nabhaniilananda
Spiritual Eco-Folk Music
Dada is a meditation instructor of Ananda Marga, an authority on Yoga philosophy, a published author and a popular musician. He plays melodic folk rock in the style of Simon & Garfunkel or Cat Stevens. He sings about spiritual experiences and ecological or human rights issues, and derives many of his ideas from myths and legends of different cultures. Dada’s immersion in eastern mysticism adds a deeper dimension to his music, giving it a lasting quality.

Japa Kirtan Band
The band consists of Cat Matlock, Jeff Schmidt, Scott Miller, Will Young, and Jacci Lea. Their music is non-traditional kirtan mixed with some favorite old spirituals and far-eastern influence. By blending western and Indian folk music into a deep devotional mood, they will help your heart soar
